"Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing." Camille Pissarro
Pupils learn to draw from observation, use their imagination, and explore a wide range of media and a variety of techniques. As they progress through the school, the pupils build on the experiences and skills of the previous years.
Themes, inspired by the work of artists and designers, are investigated within the disciplines of Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, Design and Textiles. Art is celebrated and displayed throughout the school and the beautiful natural environment within and around the grounds provides inspiration for many projects.
Visits are also made to the galleries in Edinburgh. Examples of children’s work are displayed around the school and reproduced in ‘The Bugle’. A large exhibition of all pupils' work is displayed on Sports Day in the summer term.
The senior pupils at Belhaven Hill are encouraged to keep sketch books in order to record, research, develop and to evaluate their own work, a process of experimentation that is central to enabling the pupils to become confident and creative individuals.
In their final year, a number of pupils are encouraged to prepare a portfolio of work to support their applications to their chosen school. Each year, Belhaven pupils have significant success in achieving Art Scholarships.
