A Guide to Sport and Match Days
Travelling To and From Matches
It is the school policy that all children travel both to and from all sporting fixtures with the school. We believe that fixtures are about far more than just the match itself and the camaraderie and team spirit developed during a journey can be quite important.
Only in exceptional cases, may a child return directly home with their parents and only if prior permission is obtained from the headmaster. In these instances, we would expect the child's match kit to be laundered and returned to school the next day.
Please note that from autumn 2017 onwards this will also apply to fixtures at Hallhill. On the rare occasion that there is not transport for the children, they will be expected to walk (or jog) with their team and coach back to school.
Match day sweets are certainly something which the children love but there are occasions when the volume of sweets produced is too great and goes against the very idea of the healthy lifestyle that sport is trying to promote.
All sweets at away fixtures must be handed in to the team coach and they will distribute them to the team at an appropriate time. Please don't be tempted into giving your child sweets at home matches as it will place them in a difficult position.
Children Off Games
Children may only be put off games by the school nurse or by a doctor. Those children off games will spend games times getting some fresh air if the school nurse deems it appropriate and then either reading, revising, catching up work or playing board games in the library. Occasionally those off games may be given the option of doing community service and helping out around the school while being supervised by a member of staff. In most instances, any child who is off games immediately prior to a match will be ineligible for team selection.
Wednesdays are match days and as such lessons end at lunch time. Any teams who do not have a match will have games with their coach or another member of staff. Collection time on Wednesdays is 6 pm. There will be a selection of activities offered from 4.30pm - 5.30pm on Wednesdays which the children may choose to do. Others may prefer to choose free time with their friends. There will be evening prayers for the whole school, as with every other day, at 5:50 pm before tea / pick-up.
Until half term in the autumn, children who are not in matches on a Wednesday, if not required for a training session with their coach, will have a swimming session in the school pool. After half term, they will be offered an alternative activity. During other terms, those not in matches will do an activity.
Children who are off games on a Wednesday, may well choose to watch their team-mates play otherwise they will be scooped up by a member of staff, who will do an activity with them.
Team Lists & Changes to Matches
Due to new data protection legislation, team lists will no longer be posted on the website, instead the school secretary will e mail team lists to parents at least 24 hours before a match. If in doubt, please contact Alex, the school secretary, who will have all team sheets to hand.
Cancellations or changes to match details are also posted on the website as soon as we are aware of them.
If you have any questions regarding sport at Belhaven Hill or concerns about your child's sport, your first port of call should normally be your child's coach but you are also welcome to contact the Head of Sport - William Townshend
